He wears an orange tunic with a wide belt and a white cloth hangs over one arm. The figure is cut out of a deep green panel, with the paper's name in orange and cream capitals across the top and the date set vertically down both sides. A holly-vine border runs around the panel, and a line of orange type below it announces the paper for sale.

The original: lithograph, 1895; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Louis Rhead (1857–1926) was an English-born American artist, illustrator and author. Born into a Staffordshire pottery family, he studied in Paris under Gustave Boulanger and at the National Art Training School in South Kensington, and worked for Minton and Wedgwood before moving to New York in 1883 as art director for the publisher D. Appleton. In the 1890s poster craze, influenced by Eugène Grasset, his work appeared regularly in Harper's, The Century, St. Nicholas and Scribner's, and in 1895 he won a gold medal at the first International Poster Show in Boston.
