Her red gown, with full sleeves and a long trailing cape, is spotted with orange hearts. In one hand she holds a fine brush; across her lap rests a big palette dabbed with colour, a fan of brushes at its edge. Behind her, chestnut leaves and pink-and-white flower spikes spread over a yellow ground, with blue shrub shapes below. Lettering at the top names the magazine and a band at the base describes it.

The original: lithograph, ca. 1898-99; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Louis Rhead (1857–1926) was an English-born American artist, illustrator and author. Born into a Staffordshire pottery family, he studied in Paris under Gustave Boulanger and at the National Art Training School in South Kensington, and worked for Minton and Wedgwood before moving to New York in 1883 as art director for the publisher D. Appleton. In the 1890s poster craze, influenced by Eugène Grasset, his work appeared regularly in Harper's, The Century, St. Nicholas and Scribner's, and in 1895 he won a gold medal at the first International Poster Show in Boston. He later illustrated children's classics and wrote American Trout-Stream Insects (1916).

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
