At the left a crucified man in a white loincloth hangs from a second cross, with the back of a third figure at the very edge. Between them a woman in a deep green mantle and white headcloth and a young man in a red cloak over a yellow robe stand together, hands joined. Beyond, a river winds past rocks towards blue mountains.

The Alte Pinakothek calls this Cranach's first large altar painting, made when he was thirty-one. The museum notes that he rearranged the traditional figures of the scene to centre on the Virgin's devotion and grief, set the thief on the left in steep foreshortening and turned Christ's loincloth into an ornament. It came to Munich in 1804 from a dissolved south German monastery.

The original: oil on fir panel, 1503; Alte Pinakothek, Munich.

Lucas Cranach the Elder (c. 1472–1553) was a German Renaissance painter and printmaker, born in Kronach in Franconia. From 1505 he was court painter to the Electors of Saxony at Wittenberg, where his large workshop produced many versions of his pictures. A close friend of Martin Luther, he painted the reformer, his wife and his parents and became the painter of the Reformation, while his slender, elegant nudes of Venus, Lucretia, Eve and the nymphs became his most recognisable subjects. His son Lucas Cranach the Younger carried on the workshop.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
