lucas-cranach-the-elder-martin-luther-fine-art-print
Lucas Cranach the Elder — Martin Luther | Fine Art Print

A clean-shaven man with thick, dark curling hair is shown half-length against a flat green ground, his head turned three-quarters and his brown eyes looking past the viewer. He wears a plain black gown closed high to the neck, its heavy folds only just picked out in the dark. Beside his shoulder at the right, a date and the small winged-serpent mark are painted in gold.

Cranach painted this panel as one of a pair with a portrait of Katharina von Bora, Luther's wife. The Nationalmuseum notes that such portraits spread through copies and largely fixed the popular picture of the reformer as stern and aloof, while contemporary sources describe a man with an earthy sense of humour as well as a devout and learned theologian. The pair came to the museum on deposit from Söderfors parish in 1887.

The original: oil on beech panel, 1527; Nationalmuseum, Stockholm.

Lucas Cranach the Elder (c. 1472–1553) was a German Renaissance painter and printmaker, born in Kronach in Franconia. From 1505 he was court painter to the Electors of Saxony at Wittenberg, where his large workshop produced many versions of his pictures. A close friend of Martin Luther, he painted the reformer, his wife and his parents and became the painter of the Reformation, while his slender, elegant nudes of Venus, Lucretia, Eve and the nymphs became his most recognisable subjects. His son Lucas Cranach the Younger carried on the workshop.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
