A broad ermine collar flecked with black tails lies over a red gown, and three heavy gold chains, a jewelled choker and a large pendant cover her chest. Her white sleeves are puffed and banded in red worked with gold, and her ringed hands rest one over the other at her waist, against a black background.

As court painter to the electors of Saxony, Cranach developed a portrait style that stressed princely rank through dress and jewellery, and the Art Institute of Chicago notes that this attention to detail made the sitter identifiable: a signet ring in the companion portrait of her husband, now in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, names her. A watercolour of Magdalena in the same dress suggests the portrait was made during Cranach's visit to Berlin around 1529.

The original: oil on panel, about 1529; Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago.

Lucas Cranach the Elder (c. 1472–1553) was a German Renaissance painter and printmaker, born in Kronach in Franconia. From 1505 he was court painter to the Electors of Saxony at Wittenberg, where his large workshop produced many versions of his pictures. A close friend of Martin Luther, he painted the reformer, his wife and his parents and became the painter of the Reformation, while his slender, elegant nudes of Venus, Lucretia, Eve and the nymphs became his most recognisable subjects. His son Lucas Cranach the Younger carried on the workshop.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
