lucas-cranach-the-elder-the-garden-of-eden-fine-art-print
Lucas Cranach the Elder — The Garden of Eden | Fine Art Print

A deep green garden is crowded with animals in pairs: lions, oxen, deer, a rearing white horse, a unicorn, a peacock with its tail spread, swans, wolves and a fox. At the centre a white-bearded God in a blue robe and red mantle raises a hand to a man and woman standing side by side. Smaller scenes surround them: the woman drawn from the sleeping man, the fruit offered beside a serpent with a woman's body, the pair hiding, and an angel with a sword driving them out.

The Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden reads the panel through Protestant teaching on the Word of God: at its centre God forbids Adam and Eve the fruit of the tree of knowledge, while smaller scenes show their creation, the Fall and the expulsion. The museum notes that several of the peaceful animal pairs carry meanings of their own, the fox standing for evil, the hare for lust, the unicorn for innocence and the stag for Christ as redeemer.

The original: oil on poplar panel, 1530; Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, Dresden.

Lucas Cranach the Elder (c. 1472–1553) was a German Renaissance painter and printmaker, born in Kronach in Franconia. From 1505 he was court painter to the Electors of Saxony at Wittenberg, where his large workshop produced many versions of his pictures. A close friend of Martin Luther, he painted the reformer, his wife and his parents and became the painter of the Reformation, while his slender, elegant nudes of Venus, Lucretia, Eve and the nymphs became his most recognisable subjects. His son Lucas Cranach the Younger carried on the workshop.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
