From 1505 he was court painter to the Electors of Saxony at Wittenberg, where his large workshop produced many versions of his pictures. A close friend of Martin Luther, he painted the reformer, his wife and his parents and became the painter of the Reformation, while his slender, elegant nudes of Venus, Lucretia, Eve and the nymphs became his most recognisable subjects.
