lucas-cranach-the-elder-venus-and-cupid-fine-art-print
Lucas Cranach the Elder — Venus and Cupid | Fine Art Print

A tall, pale woman stands on a pebbled strip of ground against a dark background, her long red-gold hair streaming out to one side in loose curls. She wears a gold collar and holds a transparent veil that falls across her hips from one hand to the other. At her side a plump winged child with fair curls looks up, one foot lifted from the ground, an arrow held in his hand.

The Nationalmuseum reads the picture as a possible moral warning against the temptations Venus embodies: she meets the viewer's eye while the veil she holds reveals more than it hides, and Cupid appears as a mischievous boy holding the arrow with which he wakes desire in gods and people. The panel came to the Nationalmuseum in 1865 from the Royal Museum.

The original: oil on lime wood, about 1520–1525; Nationalmuseum, Stockholm.

Lucas Cranach the Elder (c. 1472–1553) was a German Renaissance painter and printmaker, born in Kronach in Franconia. From 1505 he was court painter to the Electors of Saxony at Wittenberg, where his large workshop produced many versions of his pictures. A close friend of Martin Luther, he painted the reformer, his wife and his parents and became the painter of the Reformation, while his slender, elegant nudes of Venus, Lucretia, Eve and the nymphs became his most recognisable subjects. His son Lucas Cranach the Younger carried on the workshop.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
