She wears only a red-and-gold net cap set with pearls, a jewelled collar and a long gold chain with a pendant, and lifts a transparent veil that falls from her raised right hand across her hips to her left. The date 1532 and a small winged-serpent mark are painted at the right.

Cranach seldom painted Venus alone; she is usually accompanied by her son Cupid. The Städel reads this small panel, under 38 centimetres high, as one made to be looked at up close, most likely in the private art chamber of a humanist collector. It came to the museum in 1878 as a gift from the Frankfurt collector Moritz von Gontard.

The original: mixed technique on beech panel, 1532; Städel Museum, Frankfurt am Main.

Lucas Cranach the Elder (c. 1472–1553) was a German Renaissance painter and printmaker, born in Kronach in Franconia. From 1505 he was court painter to the Electors of Saxony at Wittenberg, where his large workshop produced many versions of his pictures. A close friend of Martin Luther, he painted the reformer, his wife and his parents and became the painter of the Reformation, while his slender, elegant nudes of Venus, Lucretia, Eve and the nymphs became his most recognisable subjects. His son Lucas Cranach the Younger carried on the workshop.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
