He trained at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts under Anselm Feuerbach and later worked in Paris, turning after a visit to Egypt to the subject that occupied the rest of his career. His paintings render the courtyards, mosques and streets of Cairo in exacting, almost photographic detail, with close attention to costume, tilework and light. His work is held by the J.
