W. | Vintage Poster Print

A large man seen from behind, drawn as a flat purple silhouette in a bowler hat, lifts a foaming glass of amber beer. Behind his legs stands a pink goat with curling horns, and a pink beet lies at lower right. The ground is a saturated yellow, with looping pink script across the top naming a bock beer brewery. Signed Ludwig Hohlwein, Munich, in a boxed monogram at lower left.

Ludwig Hohlwein (1874–1949) was a Munich poster artist whose strong contrasts of light and shade and interlocking shapes make his work readily recognisable. Trained as an architect in Munich and Dresden, he switched to poster design, and by 1925 had produced some 3,000 advertisements for clients including Kaffee Hag, Pelikan and Munich's Hellabrunn zoo, whose 1912 leopard poster is still reissued. He joined the Nazi party in 1933 and worked extensively for the regime. His posters are held by the Museum of Modern Art, the Münchner Stadtmuseum and the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
