Boccaccio's book stayed popular with French aristocratic book collectors through the 1400s; this copy belonged to Jacques d'Armagnac, Duke of Nemours.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe original: a single miniature cut from a manuscript of Boccaccio's Des Cleres et nobles femmes, tempera and gold on vellum, painted in France about 1470; Cleveland Museum of Art.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eMaître François was a French illuminator active about 1470, most likely in Paris, who ran a busy workshop. He painted the miniatures for a French translation of Saint Augustine's City of God, La Cité de Dieu, and illustrated deluxe copies of other texts popular with French collectors, such as Boccaccio's lives of famous women.
