A black-spotted serpent coils round the column; two gods haul it from the left and three figures from the right, among them a horned red demon and a beast-headed one, while a tortoise bears the column in grey water. Above, two women kneel and the treasures of the ocean float on a brown ground: a many-headed white horse, a white elephant, two rayed faces, a crescent and pots.

The original: ink and opaque watercolour on paper, about 1780-90, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Mandi school is the painting of the hill state of Mandi, in present-day Himachal Pradesh. Its earliest court pictures, from about 1635–60, closely follow Mughal court painting. Under Raja Sidh Sen (r. 1684–1727), a devotee of Shiva, it became distinctive: bold, sweeping lines, simple compositions often in three horizontal bands, and muted light blue and chocolate brown. Mandi artists painted portraits, ragamalas, the Bhagavata Purana, the Ramayana and fierce forms of the goddess Devi. Examples are held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
