A pale grey-brown moth with scalloped wings hovers at upper left and a smaller yellow moth edged in pink hangs at lower right. A long orange-brown patterned caterpillar lies along a leaf at left, a small brown one loops near the top, and two orange pupae rest on the stalk and a lower leaf.

Maria Sibylla Merian (1647–1717) was a German-born naturalist and artist from Frankfurt, the daughter of the engraver Matthäus Merian, trained by her stepfather, the still-life painter Jacob Marrel. In Nuremberg she published a flower book and, from 1679, a study of caterpillars that showed each insect through its metamorphosis on the plant it fed on. In 1699, at fifty-two, she sailed with her daughter Dorothea to Suriname, and in 1705 published Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium, with 60 engraved plates after her watercolours. Her work set a new standard of accuracy for scientific illustration. It is held by the British Museum, the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
