A pink-purple moth with four dark eyespots and orange hind wings hovers above it. Below, white blossoms with yellow-tipped stamens open beside a green caterpillar banded in black and dotted with orange that climbs the bark. Three small forms lie on the pale ground: a grey oval cocoon with black markings, a dark red-purple pupa and a small bristled brown oval.

Maria Sibylla Merian (1647–1717) was a German-born naturalist and artist from Frankfurt, the daughter of the engraver Matthäus Merian, trained by her stepfather, the still-life painter Jacob Marrel. In Nuremberg she published a flower book and, from 1679, a study of caterpillars that showed each insect through its metamorphosis on the plant it fed on. In 1699, at fifty-two, she sailed with her daughter Dorothea to Suriname, and in 1705 published Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium, with 60 engraved plates after her watercolours. Her work set a new standard of accuracy for scientific illustration. It is held by the British Museum, the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
