Large ants march along the branches, winged ants with yellow wings gather on the trunk, and a round golden fruit hangs below.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eMaria Sibylla Merian (1647–1717) was a German-born naturalist and artist from Frankfurt, the daughter of the engraver Matthäus Merian, trained by her stepfather, the still-life painter Jacob Marrel. In Nuremberg she published a flower book and, from 1679, a study of caterpillars that showed each insect through its metamorphosis on the plant it fed on. In 1699, at fifty-two, she sailed with her daughter Dorothea to Suriname, and in 1705 published Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium, with 60 engraved plates after her watercolours. Her work set a new standard of accuracy for scientific illustration.
