At the left a closed oval pod covered in fine bristles hangs from a stalk, and at the lower centre a second pod splits open to show crimson seeds, with a blue-grey butterfly resting on it. A small yellow-brown beetle sits by the upper flower, a blue-green caterpillar crosses a leaf, a hairy orange-and-green caterpillar climbs the stem, and a brown cocoon is fixed at the left.

Maria Sibylla Merian (1647–1717) was a German-born naturalist and artist from Frankfurt, the daughter of the engraver Matthäus Merian, trained by her stepfather, the still-life painter Jacob Marrel. In Nuremberg she published a flower book and, from 1679, a study of caterpillars that showed each insect through its metamorphosis on the plant it fed on. In 1699, at fifty-two, she sailed with her daughter Dorothea to Suriname, and in 1705 published Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium, with 60 engraved plates after her watercolours. Her work set a new standard of accuracy for scientific illustration. It is held by the British Museum, the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
