Above, a branch of glossy green leaves carries two wrinkled olive-yellow husks, a long green pod and a round brown cocoon. A blue-green caterpillar with red ends crawls at right, a small pink moth rests on a leaf, and a brown moth with orange hind wings trails a golden coiled tongue at left. From Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium (1719), an engraved plate.

Maria Sibylla Merian (1647–1717) was a German-born naturalist and artist from Frankfurt, the daughter of the engraver Matthäus Merian, trained by her stepfather, the still-life painter Jacob Marrel. In Nuremberg she published a flower book and, from 1679, a study of caterpillars that showed each insect through its metamorphosis on the plant it fed on. In 1699, at fifty-two, she sailed with her daughter Dorothea to Suriname, and in 1705 published Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium, with 60 engraved plates after her watercolours. Her work set a new standard of accuracy for scientific illustration. It is held by the British Museum, the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
