This plate is from the posthumous 1754 edition. The book shaped how naturalists in Europe pictured the New World for more than a century afterward.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eMark Catesby (1683–1749) was an English naturalist and the first person to publish a coloured, illustrated account of the plants and animals of North America. Travelling in Virginia, Carolina, Florida and the Bahamas, he drew birds, fish and plants from fresh specimens and — because he could not afford professional engravers — learned to etch the plates himself, colouring them by hand. His Natural History, issued from 1729 to 1747, preceded Audubon by a century.
