Born to a Quaker family in Philadelphia, she began painting wildflowers on the annual expeditions to the Canadian Rockies that also made her a pioneering mountaineer and glaciologist. Her precise, luminous studies were published by the Smithsonian in 1925 as the five-volume North American Wild Flowers, some 400 plates that earned her the name the Audubon of botany.
