master-of-james-iv-of-scotland-spinola-hours-the-virgin-and-child-enthroned-illuminated-manuscript-print
Master of James IV of Scotland — Spinola Hours: The Virgin and Child Enthroned | Illuminated Manuscript Print

The crowned Virgin sits in a sweeping blue mantle under a green canopy lettered in gold, before a cloth of gold hung between red bands, holding the Christ Child, who reaches up toward her long fair hair. Crowned women in ermine and brocade kneel at the left, and angels in yellow and pale blue pray at the right inside a grey vaulted church. A painted gold architectural frame surrounds the scene; below, three lines of red and black script on a hinged panel sit above three white angels playing instruments.

The leaf opens a prayer service in honour of the Virgin in the Spinola Hours, which the museum calls one of the most visually sophisticated Flemish manuscripts of the sixteenth century. The canopy's Latin greets her as queen and merciful virgin, and the text appears as if on a hinged panel set in front of a frame like those of carved altarpieces. The book, perhaps made for Margaret of Austria, later belonged to the Spinola family of Genoa.

The original: a leaf from the Spinola Hours, tempera colours, gold and ink on parchment, made in Bruges or Ghent about 1510–1520; J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles.

The Master of James IV of Scotland is the name scholars give a Flemish illuminator active in the years around 1500, after a portrait of King James IV of Scotland in a devotional manuscript. Over some forty years the artist directed an active workshop and contributed to many lavish manuscripts of the period, filling them with robust, unidealised figures, vivid scenes of daily life and borders that play illusionistic games with the miniatures they frame. Some evidence suggests the master may be the painter Gerard Horenbout. Leaves are held by the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
