A grey dog at his heel carries a loaf in its mouth, and a house stands among the trees behind. The arched miniature sits in a gold border strewn with red, violet and blue flowers, a white butterfly and a long-bodied insect with veined, transparent wings.

The book was illuminated in Ghent and Bruges by a circle of at least five painters, with Alexander Bening painting most of its miniatures. Made for the private devotions of Isabella the Catholic, Queen of Spain, it was probably not commissioned by her; the Cleveland Museum of Art suggests it reached her as a diplomatic gift, perhaps from Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros.

The original: a page from a book of hours made for Isabella the Catholic, Queen of Spain, illuminated in Ghent and Bruges about 1500 in ink, tempera and gold on vellum; Cleveland Museum of Art.

The Master of the First Prayerbook of Maximilian is the name scholars give the illuminator of the earliest prayer book made for the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I. He led a busy workshop in Ghent and Bruges around 1500 whose books are known for their broad figures and for borders of realistically painted flowers, birds and butterflies, and he is often identified with the Flemish illuminator Alexander Bening. He was the principal painter of the Hours of Isabella the Catholic, Queen of Spain, now in the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
