She holds a second crown in her other hand. Behind them rise the grey towers of a castle with blue roofs, and trees and a river open into a blue distance. Gold capitals formed from twisted branches fill a pink frame on two sides.

The prayer book was painted by a circle of at least five illuminators in Ghent and Bruges, with Alexander Bening as principal painter, for the private devotions of Isabella the Catholic, Queen of Spain. She probably did not commission it herself but received it as a diplomatic gift, perhaps from Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros, who became her confessor in 1492.

The original: a page from the Hours of Queen Isabella the Catholic, ink, tempera and gold on vellum, painted in Ghent and Bruges about 1500; Cleveland Museum of Art.

The Master of the First Prayerbook of Maximilian is the name scholars give the illuminator of the earliest prayer book made for the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I. He led a busy workshop in Ghent and Bruges around 1500 whose books are known for their broad figures and for borders of realistically painted flowers, birds and butterflies, and he is often identified with the Flemish illuminator Alexander Bening. He was the principal painter of the Hours of Isabella the Catholic, Queen of Spain, now in the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
