master-of-the-osservanza-initial-l-the-baptism-of-saint-augustine-illuminated-initial-print
Master of the Osservanza — Initial L: The Baptism of Saint Augustine | Illuminated Initial Print

Inside an orange initial wreathed in green and plum acanthus leaves on a gold ground, Saint Ambrose, mitred and haloed in a pink robe and green cope, tips a small white vessel over Augustine, who kneels bare-chested on a marbled floor with his hands joined in prayer. At right his mother, Saint Monica, prays in a black and white habit. The scene sits in a mauve chapel with two blue arched windows. The initial was probably painted in Siena about 1430 for a choir book of Augustinian priests.

The original: a cutting with a historiated initial from a choir book, painted in Siena, Italy, about 1430, in tempera colours, gold leaf, gold paint and ink; J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles.

The Master of the Osservanza is the name scholars give a Sienese painter of the second quarter of the fifteenth century, after a triptych in the church of the Osservanza just outside Siena. Like many Sienese artists he was both a panel painter and an illuminator; he painted several altarpieces, among them scenes from the life of Saint Anthony Abbot, and an initial with the Baptism of Saint Augustine is in the J. Paul Getty Museum.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order. Unframed prints are made on Hahnemühle German Etching, a 310gsm matte fine-art paper.
