He looks up to the bowl of the letter, where Christ leans out amid white rays, blessing with one hand and holding a gold orb in the other. The deep blue ground is traced with white rosettes; blue leaves and buds curl from the letter at the left, and fragments of script run above and below.

The letter introduces the first psalm, Beatus vir. David plays a psaltery, a shallow plucked box that was widely popular in Europe in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, in place of his traditional harp. The illuminator takes his name from a volume of Suetonius's Lives of the Emperors that he decorated in 1431 for Filippo Maria Visconti, Duke of Milan.

The original: an initial B cut from a choir psalter, ink, tempera and gold leaf on vellum, made in Italy about 1430–1450; Cleveland Museum of Art.

The Master of the Vitae Imperatorum is the name scholars give the illuminator of a copy of Suetonius's Lives of the Emperors decorated in 1431 for Filippo Maria Visconti, duke of Milan, his earliest dated work. He is noted for his distinctive line and colour, and an initial B with King David playing the psaltery, from a choir psalter of about 1430–50, is in the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
