The plate is printed in dark ink on cream paper, with the dragon's scales left light against the dark ground.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eMatthäus Merian the Elder (1593–1650) was a Swiss-born engraver and publisher who settled in Frankfurt, where he ran one of the great illustrated-book houses of the seventeenth century. He engraved the emblem plates of Michael Maier's Atalanta Fugiens (1618), city views across Europe and illustrated Bibles. His firm, carried on by his heirs, published the Musaeum Hermeticum (1678), an anthology of alchemical treatises whose engraved title page and Lambsprinck emblems are among the best-known alchemical images.
