High in its branches one bird perches with open wings and beak, and below it a second bird sits in a nest, beak open too. At the foot of the tree a large snail with a spiral shell creeps along the path past the roots. To the left the land falls away to wooded hills, a castle among trees and a distant summit under long streaks of cloud. Engraved by Matthäus Merian for Lambsprinck's De Lapide Philosophico, 1678.

Matthäus Merian the Elder (1593–1650) was a Swiss-born engraver and publisher who settled in Frankfurt, where he ran one of the great illustrated-book houses of the seventeenth century. He engraved the emblem plates of Michael Maier's Atalanta Fugiens (1618), city views across Europe and illustrated Bibles. His firm, carried on by his heirs, published the Musaeum Hermeticum (1678), an anthology of alchemical treatises whose engraved title page and Lambsprinck emblems are among the best-known alchemical images. His daughter was the naturalist and artist Maria Sibylla Merian.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
