Born in Fresno, California, he studied briefly with Arthur Mathews at the California School of Design and worked for years as a commercial illustrator before turning fully to painting. From the 1920s he simplified his compositions into broad planes of mesa, cloud and horizon, painting Native American life and the deserts of Arizona and New Mexico.
