Two eagles swoop in from either side, talons reaching for his open hands. Behind him the water stretches to a town with domes and towers at the right, a sailing boat at the left and pale mountains under banks of cloud. The book's epigram names him as Jupiter, said to have sent twin eagles east and west to find the centre of the world.

The original: engraving, 1618, Wellcome Collection, London.

Michael Maier (1568–1622) was a German physician, alchemist and author, born in Rendsburg in Holstein, who took a doctorate in medicine at Basel in 1596. In 1609 he became physician and counsellor to the Emperor Rudolf II in Prague, who made him a count palatine, and he later spent several years in England before settling in Frankfurt. His best-known book, Atalanta Fugiens, published by Johann Theodor de Bry at Oppenheim in 1617 and again in 1618, is an alchemical emblem book of fifty emblems, each combining an engraving by Matthäus Merian the Elder with an epigram, a prose discourse and a fugue for three voices. He died in Magdeburg. Copies of the book are held by the Wellcome Collection and the Science History Institute.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
