He was one of the artists who in turn directed work on the illustrated Shahnama of Shah Tahmasp, and his own pages for it, such as Bahram Chubina slaying the lion-ape, are painted with close attention to detail; with Aqa Mirak he also worked on the Shah's Khamsa of Nizami of 1539–43. He taught his son, the painter Mir Sayyid Ali, and like him later left Iran for the court of the Mughal emperor Humayun. His work is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Cleveland Museum of Art. Qasim ibn Ali was a Persian painter from Shiraz, active about 1525 to 1560 at the Safavid court, and one of the artists of the illustrated Shahnama made for Shah Tahmasp in Tabriz. His pages, such as Isfandiyar slaying a dragon and Siyavush playing polo before Afrasiyab, carry features of the earlier Turkmen school, such as writhing bare bushes and squat figures, which he later toned down under the workshop director Mir Musavvir.
