morgan-picture-bible-scenes-from-the-life-of-david-illuminated-manuscript-print
Morgan Picture Bible: Scenes from the Life of David | Illuminated Manuscript Print

Two painted registers sit beneath arcades and crenellated towers. Above left, a crowned king with a sceptre listens as a man with a spear kneels and another points; above right, against deep blue, a bearded young man in orange sits among six women, an arm round each of two, robes hung on a rod overhead. Below, mourners with hands to their faces leave a gate towards a hill where a crowned, barefoot figure walks beside two laden donkeys. Latin text runs above and below, and cursive script fills the margins.

The leaf belongs to the Morgan Picture Bible and tells part of the story of King David and his rebellious son Absalom. At almost eleven inches tall the miniature is unusually large for a manuscript painting; the illuminator kept the forms simple, stripped the story to its most necessary details and relied on saturated blue and orange-red.

The original: a detached leaf from the Morgan Picture Bible, painted in tempera colours and gold leaf in northern France about 1250. It is held by the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
