Gardiner Greene Hubbard was its first president, succeeded by Alexander Graham Bell in 1897, and in 1899 Gilbert Hovey Grosvenor became the first full-time editor of National Geographic magazine. The Society went on to publish maps, books and other media alongside the magazine.
