Acanthus and gold discs climb the left side, and square dark notes on red staves run beside and below the letter.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis cutting is one of twenty known large historiated initials made for a choir book commissioned by the Carthusian monastery of Santo Spirito in Lucca. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eNiccolò di Giacomo da Bologna, active from 1349 to 1403, was a leading illuminator in Bologna, the university city famous for its law faculty, known for expressive figures and crowded, action-filled scenes. His first signed works are copies of Gratian's canon law, and with his workshop he went on to illuminate choir books, devotional books, poetry, statute books and guild registers; he was appointed illuminator to the city in the 1380s and took part in its government. His work is held by the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art in Washington and the Cleveland Museum of Art.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eEach print is a giclée, printed to order.
