Born in Normandy, he settled in Rome in 1624 and spent almost his whole career there, apart from an unhappy two years as first painter to Louis XIII in Paris. Working for scholars and collectors rather than the court, he painted myths, Bible stories and ancient history in carefully ordered compositions, and in later years ideal landscapes such as those of Phocion and Saint John on Patmos. The French Academy took his method as its model for two centuries.
