nicolas-poussin-landscape-with-a-calm-fine-art-print
Nicolas Poussin — Landscape with a Calm | Fine Art Print

A still lake mirrors a pale-stone villa with a crenellated tower, set on a walled hill below a blue-grey mountain and drifting cloud. In the foreground a man in a red tunic leans on a staff beside a white dog, with goats resting and standing around him. A rider gallops along the path at left past a small arcaded building, and a long line of sheep and cattle crosses the far bank. Tall trees frame both sides, the one at right slender, with finely drawn leaves.

The Getty places the picture in the years when Poussin turned from historical narrative to landscape, and reads it as an evocation of mood rather than an illustration of a story. It was painted for the Parisian merchant Jean Pointel as a pendant to Landscape with a Storm, now in Rouen, the two setting calm and tempest side by side.

The original: oil on canvas, 1650–1651; J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles.

Nicolas Poussin (1594–1665) was the founding figure of French classical painting. Born in Normandy, he settled in Rome in 1624 and spent almost his whole career there, apart from an unhappy two years as first painter to Louis XIII in Paris. Working for scholars and collectors rather than the court, he painted myths, Bible stories and ancient history in carefully ordered compositions, and in later years ideal landscapes such as those of Phocion and Saint John on Patmos. The French Academy took his method as its model for two centuries. His work is held by the Louvre, the National Gallery, London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
