This first version, made in Rome in the mid-1630s, is the one in the Metropolitan Museum; the second, of 1637 or 1638, is in the Louvre. For the entwined pairs of abductor and captive he probably drew on Giambologna's marble group of the same subject, and the group at the right recalls a Roman marble unearthed only a few years earlier.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe original: oil on canvas, probably 1633–34; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eNicolas Poussin (1594–1665) was the founding figure of French classical painting. Born in Normandy, he settled in Rome in 1624 and spent almost his whole career there, apart from an unhappy two years as first painter to Louis XIII in Paris. Working for scholars and collectors rather than the court, he painted myths, Bible stories and ancient history in carefully ordered compositions, and in later years ideal landscapes such as those of Phocion and Saint John on Patmos. The French Academy took his method as its model for two centuries.
