Around her, men and women with bare shoulders or torsos lie, kneel and lean: a helmeted man stands by a stone herm with a sword at his foot, and a kneeling youth bends over a glass vase of flowers. Infants play at the sides, two greyhounds lie among the figures, and a chariot of white horses crosses the clouds above.

Nicolas Poussin (1594–1665) was the founding figure of French classical painting. Born in Normandy, he settled in Rome in 1624 and spent almost his whole career there, apart from an unhappy two years as first painter to Louis XIII in Paris. Working for scholars and collectors rather than the court, he painted myths, Bible stories and ancient history in carefully ordered compositions, and in later years ideal landscapes such as those of Phocion and Saint John on Patmos. The French Academy took his method as its model for two centuries. His work is held by the Louvre, the National Gallery, London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
