Poussin built it from clear primary colours, simple forms and a geometric plan, and the museum notes that he studied the lighting with small wax models in a pierced box.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe original: oil on canvas, 1648; Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eNicolas Poussin (1594–1665) was the founding figure of French classical painting. Born in Normandy, he settled in Rome in 1624 and spent almost his whole career there, apart from an unhappy two years as first painter to Louis XIII in Paris. Working for scholars and collectors rather than the court, he painted myths, Bible stories and ancient history in carefully ordered compositions, and in later years ideal landscapes such as those of Phocion and Saint John on Patmos. The French Academy took his method as its model for two centuries.
