The warm cream-tan ground carries an ornate Slavonic-style title in brown at the upper right and a date line in red-brown below the scene, and the lower third is set in columns of fine type under a large charity appeal.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eNikolai Samokysh (1860–1944), born in Nizhyn in the Chernihiv province, was a battle painter, animal painter and illustrator. He studied in the battle-painting class of the Imperial Academy of Arts in St Petersburg from 1879 to 1885 and then worked in Paris under Édouard Detaille. His drawings appeared in Niva, and in 1904 he went to the front of the Russo-Japanese War as an artist. In 1915 he took a group of his students to the front of the First World War, where they made some four hundred works. After 1918 he lived in Crimea, founding a studio in Simferopol, and later painted cycles on the Civil War. He died in Simferopol.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eEach print is a giclée, printed to order.
