Oil, thickly painted.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eOdilon Redon (1840–1916) was a French Symbolist painter and printmaker. Trained briefly under Jean-Léon Gérôme in Paris and then in etching and lithography under Rodolphe Bresdin in Bordeaux, he spent his early career on the noirs, charcoal drawings and lithographs of floating eyes and strange heads, which gained attention after being described in Huysmans's 1884 novel À rebours. After 1900 he turned largely to pastel and oil, working in vivid colour on floral and mythological subjects.
