A title cartouche sits at the upper right, and the artist's brush signature with a red seal appears at the lower left beside the dark clouds.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eOgata Gekkō (1859–1920) was a Japanese ukiyo-e printmaker and painter, born Nagami Masanosuke in Edo and largely self-taught after early encouragement from Kawanabe Kyōsai. Working under the art name Gekkō, he produced bird-and-flower, history and bijin-ga prints and illustrated more than fifty books, including the sketchbook series Gekkō Manga (1894–1903). Emperor Meiji purchased one of his paintings at a Japan Art Association exhibition in 1898, and he won prizes at the 1893 Chicago World's Columbian Exposition and the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition.
