Land is tinted ochre-yellow against ruled grey-brown seas, and a large southern continent labelled Terra Australis fills the right lobe around a polar circle. A banner above the crowned shield reads Nova, et integra universi orbis descriptio; ribbons below name the northern and southern parts, and a framed Latin note to the reader, dated 1531, sits at the foot.

Finé's 1531 world map redraws the globe on a heart-shaped projection, the northern hemisphere in one lobe and the southern in the other. It joins Asia and North America into a single landmass, gives the name America to South America, and shows a southern continent as recently discovered but not yet fully explored. Later cartographers, among them Peter Apian and Gerardus Mercator, adopted the heart-shaped projection.

Oronce Finé (1494–1555) was a French mathematician, cartographer, editor and book illustrator, born in Briançon. He took a medical degree in Paris in 1522 and in 1531 became the first holder of the chair of mathematics at the Collège Royal, now the Collège de France. His woodcut map of France (1525) is one of the first of its kind, and his heart-shaped world map of 1531 introduced a projection that Peter Apian and Gerardus Mercator later used. He also wrote the astronomy textbook De mundi sphaera (1542) and the mathematical compilation Protomathesis.

Printed as a museum-grade giclée on Hahnemühle fine art paper using 12-ink archival pigment printing.
