oskar-schlemmer-postcard-invitation-to-a-lantern-festival-art-print
Oskar Schlemmer — Postcard invitation to a lantern festival | Art Print

A large cream oval fills the left of a black card, its edge lettered in angular capitals with the festival's name. Inside sits an orange square framed in green, and beside it the card names the Bauhaus midsummer celebration at Weimar and the year 1922. A pleated lantern striped blue, orange and cream hangs below; a yellow gourd-shaped lantern spotted with black floats above. A pale blue crystal form, a lilac ribbed disc, white stars and a pink profile head at the right edge complete the design.

Oskar Schlemmer (1888–1943) was a German painter, sculptor and stage designer who taught at the Bauhaus from 1920 to 1929 and led its theatre workshop. His Triadic Ballet (1922) turned dancers into moving geometric figures, and the same doll-like, profiled bodies fill his paintings of groups in rooms and on stairs; Bauhaus Stairway (1932) is in the Museum of Modern Art, New York. The Nazi regime branded his work degenerate in 1937, and he spent his last years in Wuppertal.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
