Trained originally in dentistry, he turned to art and by 1908 was living in Paris at the Bateau-Lavoir alongside Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso, becoming one of the pioneers of abstract art. His geometric compositions in painting, mosaic and sculpture were condemned by the Nazis as degenerate art, one sculpture appearing on the cover of the 1937 Degenerate Art exhibition catalogue, and he was murdered at Majdanek concentration camp in 1943.
