New York Public Library.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ePamela Colman Smith (1878–1951) was an artist, illustrator and writer, born in London to American parents and raised partly in Jamaica. She studied at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn under Arthur Wesley Dow, then worked in London with the Lyceum Theatre company on costumes and sets and ran the Green Sheaf Press. In 1907 Alfred Stieglitz gave her the first exhibition of paintings at his gallery 291. Through W. B. Yeats she joined the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, and in 1909 Arthur Edward Waite commissioned her to design the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot, one of the most widely used decks. She died in Cornwall, in debt.
