Born in Villefranche-sur-Saône, he moved to Paris in 1893 to study at the École normale d'enseignement du dessin, where the decorative-art teaching of Eugène Grasset shaped his style. Most of his colour lithographs carried no advertising and were meant as decorative panels, drawn in soft autumnal pastels with crisp outlines, and his posters appeared in Les Maîtres de l'Affiche, for which he also designed a cover.
