paul-signac-gasometers-at-clichy-fine-art-print
Paul Signac — Gasometers at Clichy | Fine Art Print

Three iron gasometer frames rise behind a cluster of small suburban houses with orange-red roofs, one at the left, one beside the pale stone gable at the centre and one at the right. A picket fence crosses the middle ground. In front, a sandy yard patched with grass is scored by two curving cart tracks, and a blue-grey wall runs along the road at left. The sky is a finely worked blue, and the divided touch is visible in every surface, from roofs to ground.

The original: oil on canvas, 1886; National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne.

Paul Signac (1863–1935) was a French Neo-Impressionist painter who, with Georges Seurat, developed pointillism, applying pure colour in small, separate dots that blend in the viewer's eye. Largely self-taught, he met Seurat in 1884 and co-founded the Société des Artistes Indépendants that year. After Seurat's death he settled at Saint-Tropez and turned increasingly to watercolour, painting the harbours and sailing craft of Mediterranean ports in loose, luminous washes. His work is held by the Musée d'Orsay, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
