pentecost-tongues-of-fire-illuminated-manuscript-print
Pentecost (Tongues of Fire) | Illuminated Manuscript Print

Twelve apostles crowd together under a tiled roof and a row of round arches, their heads tilted up and a small orange flame on each brow; orange streaks rain down across the gold behind them. The four in front sit with bare feet on a blue and gold footboard, holding red and blue books, in mantles of dark blue, pale rose, ochre and light blue. Haloes of red, blue and gold ring the heads, and a wide border of blue leaf roundels on rose red frames the scene.

This is the last of six full-page New Testament miniatures placed before the text of an Ottonian sacramentary, the book of prayers recited at Mass. The museum notes that it follows the biblical account literally, with tongues of fire alighting on each apostle, and that its modelling emulates Byzantine painting. Archbishop Bardo of Mainz probably gave the book to the church of Saint Aubin in Namur at its founding in 1046.

The original: a leaf from an Ottonian sacramentary, tempera colours and gold, made in Mainz or Fulda, Germany, about 1025–1050; J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order. Unframed prints are made on Hahnemühle German Etching, a 310gsm matte fine-art paper.
