Trained as a painter in Hamburg, Düsseldorf and Karlsruhe, he moved through the Jugendstil movement into architecture and, from 1907, worked as artistic consultant to the electrical firm AEG, designing buildings, products, typefaces and a unified corporate identity for it in what is now credited as founding industrial design. His AEG Turbine Factory in Berlin (1909) reduced ornament to structure and proportion, a rational classicism that influenced younger architects who trained in his office, including Walter Gropius, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier.
