At left a spectacled scholar reads a large book in a carved chair while a bearded man leans over to point at the page. At the centre a tall round furnace carries domed stills, tended by a kneeling boy, and a second boy pounds herbs in a great mortar. Bearded assistants hold a curved flask and gesture between the vessels, a man works a screw press at right, and fires glow in the back rooms. The caption beneath names the scene Distillatio.

Philips Galle (1537–1612) was an Antwerp engraver and publisher; Jan van der Straet (Stradanus, 1523–1605) was a Flemish painter who worked for the Medici in Florence.
